Going Beyond Our Limitations
We recently delivered 610 lbs of fresh produce to Chef Cheryl at Miriam’s Kitchen. An abundance of potatoes, poblano peppers, kale, sweet potatoes, onions, mushrooms, jicama, limes, corn, pears, bananas, quinoa, couscous and fresh parsley, went to making delicious meals for those in need!
She explained that every week is like an episode of the TV show, CHOPPED. They never know what ingredients they’ll get so they improvise their meals. When they order with KPC Buddhist Relief, it’s easier for the chefs to plan ahead - we happily bring them what they ask for!
We had the opportunity to talk with Chef Marcus on Friday and learn about what brought him to Miriam’s Kitchen. He learned to cook alongside his mother and grandmother when he was young. As an adult, he become the VP of Marketing and Development for a large construction firm, but he was still always cooking for his family and their events.
About 6 years ago, Marcus attended a volunteer day at Miriam’s Kitchen. He loved it and was inspired, telling Chef Cheryl that he wished he could cook with them. She said she’d be happy to have him although she couldn’t pay him what he was worth. The money wasn’t the important part. He prayed on it and a week later he told Cheryl he’d love to join the staff. He’s been with them for 5.5 years and his life has more meaning and purpose now because of those he serves.
Miriam’s Kitchen is warm, inclusive, and we are so happy to serve the community alongside them.
We invite you to join us in feeding and nurturing those in need.
