Good Hearts at Miriam's Kitchen
On Friday October 25, Rudy, Yekta, and Ariana delivered 205 pounds of produce to Miriam's Kitchen, along with 35 pounds of rice, 42 pounds of creamer, two large containers of Gochujang red chili paste (2.2 lbs each), and 3.3 pounds of miso. The produce included cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, lemons, avocados, oranges, cucumbers, parsley, red onions, green onions, leeks, baby bella mushrooms, and guajillo peppers.
Executive Sous Chef Marcus was ready and waiting with a big smile when we arrived and helped us quickly unload. Although he was busy that morning, he took a moment to chat when Ariana asked about his favorite type of food to cook. "Italian!" he said without hesitation. "And Cajun." Then he added that over the past 25 years, he had cooked just about every kind of cuisine.
Twenty-five years is a lot of hours over a hot stove—slicing, stirring, lifting huge pots, and tailoring food to meet what people need for nourishment, both of body and spirit. And he was happy to do it—this man with a Good Heart humbly feeding the poor.
Jetsunma has taught us over the years about having a Good Heart and now urges us to bring that goodness into the world through Buddhist Relief. To stand up for the poor day after day, week after week. And in doing so, we keep discovering more Good Hearts already out there, quietly going about their business of being this Great Love in the world. How precious this is. How fortunate we are.
