Friday March 22nd delivery to the First Baptist Church of Silver Spring
Our delivery team arrived at the First Baptist Church of Silver Spring at the same time as the delivery from the Capital Area Food Bank. As they unloaded standard fare of canned vegetables and the like, we provided foods that recognized the ethnic diversity of the people they serve, and the need for food to provide comfort and nurturance as well as nutrition.
Our offerings ranged from taco shells to black-eyed peas, mackerel and pink salmon to donuts and chocolate chip cookies along with basic condiments so much a part of our eating habits but so rarely offered by federal food programs.
We were greeted by Joanne, the church secretary extraordinaire, and her volunteers who carted the food items into their pantry and began to stock the shelves.
We were soon joined by Sarah Reed who thanked us profusely, noting how challenging the Church has been finding it to underwrite the cost of the food pantry and the huge difference our donations make. They see an average of 45 families over a two hour period Saturday mornings, and by the end of that time, the fully stocked shelves are close to empty.
Their services are so needed by the families they serve – please help us help them keep their doors open and their shelves stocked with delicious foods.
